Report: New York ranks second worst state to retire to because who can afford to retire here?
Many seniors tout NYC as an invigorating place to live, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. And neither is the state as a whole, and one new study says that New York is actually the second worst state to retire.
A new Bankrate.com report compared data for five categories: affordability, wellness, weather, culture, and crime and found that New York ranks dead last in affordability—the study’s most important metric—and 13th worst in weather. It fared well in culture (7th) and crime (tied for 11th with Massachusetts).
The top five states to retire are: Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Florida. The five worst states to retire are: Maryland, New York, Alaska, Illinois and Washington.
Bankrate has an interactive tool, above, to help people identify which state might be best for them to retire.
