New York City may be an expensive place to live but here’s something to feel better about: Out of the 50 states and District of Columbia, New York State is one of the least expensive states to live in when it comes to spending money on energy.

Personal finance website WalletHub just released its report on 2019's Most & Least Energy-Expensive States. New York State is ranked the ninth least energy-expensive in a comparison that looked at electricity, natural gas, motor fuel, and home heating oil.

The average New York State monthly energy bill is $284. In Connecticut, the most expensive state, the monthly energy bill averages $373. District of Columbia, the least expensive, has an average monthly energy bill of $204.

The report drills down (bad pun?) into different types of energy use. New York is ranked 50th in terms of electrical consumption per consumer—making it the second lowest in electricity use after Hawaii.

What makes energy costs higher in some states? Michael Wetzstein, professor at the Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, says a poor electrical grid, inability to transfer energy efficiently across regions, and lack of energy investment are to blame.
