Standing desks are seemingly all the rage these days, what with the growing body of research on the evils of days spent sitting at a computer. (Who'd guess that staying on your feet could lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes?) But of all the models out there, the Press Fit standing desk may be the one best tailored for New Yorkers.
The brainchild of MIT grad students Isabella Tromba and David Yamnitsky, the desk is made of lightweight plywood pieces that pack flat, so it’s a breeze to move, and fits together like a puzzle without using any screws, tools or even an instruction manual. If you need to, you could disassemble it in advance of a dinner party to maximize space in your apartment.

The desk starts off as an 8 foot by 4 foot panel of pre-finished maple plywood that’s cut in a digital manufacturing process (to keep the price down) and stuck together with biodegradable glue (to keep all those pesky toxins out of your space).
As its creators boast, the item is “more stable than any desk you've ever owned” and, in theory, will last for decades (or at least until well after the standing-desk craze subsides).

You’ve got two different size options: 36 inches by 24 inches for a standard computer monitor, or 48 inches by 30 inches to accommodate shelves, speakers or other equipment. You can get one with a $199 pledge to Press Fit's Kickstarter campaign, though prices will be higher once full production starts. So far, they've raised $43,000--more than four times their target of $10,000--with 10 days to go.
