Room For Improvement: A chef's kitchen & no more living above a restaurant, please
From the ultimate closet to the simple dream of an in-unit washer/ dryer, these five New Yorker share what would improve their city living lives.
  • Some peace and quietI wish I didn’t live above a restaurant. It’s fine in the winter, but in the summer it gets really loud with people outside. I wish I could afford soundproof windows. -Chet, Upper West Side
  • The kitchen fantasyI'd love a chef's kitchen: a pot filler by the stove, a marble slab for making pastry, counterspace for my Kitchenaid, SubZero with glass doors, a wine cooler, and of course, a dishwasher. -Leila, Flushing
  • Central a/c (or better TV speakers) Central A/C! Window units take away the light and the view. Plus, they are so loud that for the three summer months out of the year, I can’t really hear anything on the TV. -Flo, Harlem
  • Ne plus ultra of closetsI would have a walk-in closet. One that looks like a Banana Republic store except with cooler clothes. I want it to be built out completely, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling storage with slots for each pair of shoes and each bag. With a library ladder to access them. Or actually, if I could have anything I wanted, I would have the ultimate girl’s dream: Cher’s closet fromClueless.-Ronnie, Queens
  • A washer/dryer standard of livingI’d have a washer/dryer in my apartment, for sure. Going out to do laundry in this heat is unbearable. Right now, I’m hand washing stuff and laying it out to dry on a rack by the window just so that I can save a trip to the Laundromat. It’s too expensive to do laundry pick-up/delivery service. It’s just sad that something that’s a standard feature of life in the western world isn’t always available to residents of the best city in the world. -Wyatt, Upper East Side
