After you’ve done all the math and you find you have a budget of $400,000—give or take a few thousand—head straight for Manhattan for a studio or one-bedroom (though we did find one two-bedroom HDFC co-op for that price). Need more space? Expand your search to, yes, Brooklyn and the other boroughs, where you’ll find two- to three-bedroom apartments, as well as single- and multi-family houses.
