SNL skewers "smart" homes, but oh, how fun they are
Smart home technology is becoming common enough that it's now the butt (quite literally) of Saturday Night Live jokes. Last weekend's show had a skit about a forward-thinking couple and their questionable innovations, including a toaster with eyes (googly ones for now) that can hover at eye-level and tell you how toasted your bread is and a smart couch that recognizes you by your backside. The sensor on that one is attached to a tube (also with googly eyes) that goes where the sun don't shine.
Personally, when it comes to smart technology we'd prefer this (much less invasive) tricked-out mattress cover.
All joking aside, smart home technology can make apartment-living so much more decadent. (We'd love a home that was perfectly heated and cooled at all times of the day, for one. And music piped in everywhere, at the touch of a button. And an automatic hot chocolate maker, if such a thing exists.) If you're pining for a tricked-out apartment, feast your eyes on these:
• An $8.2 million three-bedroom, three-bath Turtle Bay condo with a smart home system that manages lighting, music, and security

• A $14 million three-bed, four-bath penthouse condo with smart-home technology (and a 2,000-square-foot private terrace)
• A $13.495 million two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath in the famed One57 building has smart technology and full Central Park views

• A $7.3 million three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Tribeca condo that's pre-wired to accommodate smart home systems
