We hate to be unromantic, but the truth is that in NYC, some couples choose to live together less out of love than out of a desire to save some money on rent. Whatever the reason you're deciding to make this relationship leap, sharing weekly date nights isn’t the same as sharing a bathroom, so you need to have your eyes wide open at all times. Here, some do’s and don’ts to help your relationship survive cohabitation.
Do’s:
- Decide what kind of apartment you want:Both of you should make a list of priorities, i.e., price range, close to friends, close to subway, new appliances, etc., and make it known to each other which are most and least important so you can jump on the perfect unit when it becomes available.
- Divide utilities evenly:One of you should put your name on the electric and gas bills and the other should take the Internet. Be up front about costs from the get-go.
- Divide up chores:Would you rather do the dishes than take out the trash? No problem. Things will go smoother if you divvy up the chores based on who has a preference for what.
Don’ts:
- Rent a studio:It doesn’t matter how in love you are, it’s important to be able to escape from time to time. Having a door (perhaps to slam?) is key. And if all you can afford is a studio, try to make sure it’s got an alcove.
- Only put one name on the lease:If you do decide to break up, and your name isn’t on the lease, you’ll have no legal right to the apartment. And if you’re the one on the lease, you could be held financially responsible if the other person decides to move out.
