Is it only low-income New Yorkers who can score an apartment under the city’s affordable housing programs? Not necessarily. Applications opened today for 31 rentals in Harlem available for singles and families making between roughly $48,000 and $138,000 a year.
The apartments range from studios starting at $1,155 a month to one-bedrooms starting at $1,240 a month and two-bedrooms starting at $1,883 a month. As is the case with most affordable housing, income restrictions apply, but the limits are on the high end. For example, five studios renting for about $1,900 a month are for singles making up to about $97,000 a year, and couples or families earning up to about $138,000 a year can rent nine two-bedrooms that cost roughly $2,400 a month. The apartments are in a trio of low-rises--63 West 137th Street, 119 West 133rd Street and 229 West 121st Street--that were gut renovated by Harlem-based developer Artimus Construction. “It’s going to feel new on the inside, but it’s an older building,” says Sunny Khan, a marketing associate at K&R Realty Management, the property manager for the buildings. While they don’t have fancy extras like a doorman or gym, there are elevators and laundry facilities, Khan tells us.
The application deadline is April 20, so get your paperwork ready, and cross your fingers: K&R expects to get close to 10,000 applications, Khan says.
