5 state of the art studios that make one-room living seem downright luxurious
If you have a hard time getting excited about a one-room apartment, you haven’t experienced a highly engineered version like the ones featured here. With clever designs, creative storage solutions and customized built-ins galore, they take one-room living to the next super-stylish level.
As far as studios go, this Upper East Side rental at 14 East 64th Street for $3,950 a month is pretty sweet with its private deck, south-facing bay window with built-in seat (that doubles as a day bed) and gas fireplace. As if that weren’t enough, it's also got an installed flat screen (with speakers), a marble kitchen with lots of cabinets, a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and—the pièce de resistance—a remote controlled bed that's hidden in the ceiling by day and can be lowered to the floor come night.

Thirteen-foot ceilings allowed for this loft studio at 111 Fourth Avenue (on the market for $685,000) to accommodate an open bedroom above a first floor home office. It’s also got plenty of storage, closets and built-ins, a bathroom with a thermostatic shower system, plus a pretty awesome stainless steel kitchen complete with a 46-inch Samsung flatscreen SMART TV built right into the center island.

This $795,000 studio at 20 East 9th Street has distinct areas for sleeping, lounging, dining, cooking, working and bathing—all made even more practical thanks to a plethora of creative built-ins, including a Murphy bed with individual reading lights and a headboard that prevents pillows from slipping behind the mattress, tons of cabinets and shelves, and a TV concealed behind a sliding panel on the wall.
Most 340-square-foot studios would feel poke-y, but 15-foot ceilings, a second floor loft, a wall of windows, a sleek kitchen with plenty of clever cabinetry and an oversized closet (enclosing a washer and dryer) make this one-room home at 148 East 19th Street (on sale for $795,000) feel more commodious than cramped.
