The city is taking applications for two apartments in a new building in Wakefield, in the northern reaches of the Bronx, through the housing lottery.
The apartments are a one and a two bedroom in an eight-unit building at 626 East 223rd St. The one bedroom is set aside for one or two people making $23,657-$30,560 total a year, with a rent of $690 a month. The two bedroom is reserved for two to four people making $41,143-$57,240 a year altogether. The rent for that apartment is $1,200 a month.
Wakefield is a quiet, working-class neighborhood of small houses and prewar apartment buildings at the end of the 2 and 5 line, bordered to the north by Mount Vernon. It's about an hour from Midtown via the 2 and 5 trains, or an hour and a half by express bus. The Metro-North runs into Grand Central in just under a half hour from the Woodlawn stop, which is a 15-minute walk away from the building.
